About the Family
A friendly, down-to-earth retired couple are looking for an experienced domestic couple to join them at their beautiful rural home on the Somerset/Wiltshire border, close to Bruton. The estate spans around 80 acres and includes the main five-bedroom house, a two-bedroom guest barn, and additional amenities such as an indoor pool, sauna and gym. The principals travel regularly, often spending time in London and also several weeks each summer at their holiday home, therefore they are looking for a trustworthy couple who are happy to look after the house, garden, dog and chickens while they are away.
This is a lovely opportunity for a couple who enjoy rural life and are looking for a long-term role in a relaxed and welcoming household.
The Role
This position would suit a capable and organised couple where one partner focuses on housekeeping and the other on gardening, maintenance and driving.
The housekeeping role will involve around 30 hours per week and includes keeping the home clean, organised and running smoothly, managing laundry and ironing, and preparing simple, fresh meals for the principals. The household has a relaxed, informal approach to food and someone who enjoys home-style cooking will fit in well.
The gardener/handyman role will be closer to full-time hours (around 40 hours per week). The focus will be on maintaining the gardens immediately surrounding the house, including mowing, hedging and caring for the flower beds, as well as general upkeep of the outdoor spaces. There will also be general estate support such as light maintenance tasks and occasional driving duties, including taking the principals to and from local dinner parties and occasional trips to the train station.
When the principals are travelling, the couple will oversee the property, including caring for the dog and chickens and ensuring the house and gardens remain well maintained.
Ideal Candidate
- Previous experience working together as a domestic couple in a private household
- Strong gardening skills and confidence maintaining large gardens and grounds
- Experienced housekeeper who enjoys cooking and running a home efficiently
- Practical, proactive and happy supporting across the estate when needed
- Confident driver with a clean licence and own vehicle
- Trustworthy and reliable, particularly when responsible for the property while the principals travel
